5 Ways to Beat the Homesick Blues at College

 

Your first month as a college student can be a whirlwind.  Between moving into a new home, making friends and preparing for those first exams around the corner, you’ve barely had a moment to sit down! While the world around you is moving at lightning speed, we know that amidst the chaos, it’s easy to feel homesick during those first months at college. While time is the true answer for adapting to this change, we have a few tips to help you along the way!

bring something from home

No matter if your memento is big or small, don’t hesitate to bring it back to school with you. It could be a necklace you wear every day or even your favorite throw blanket that you always snuggle up in during Gilmore Girls marathons. You’ll be surprised by how much comfort this can bring you on those days you’re missing home a little extra.

write it out

We know, we know you’ve probably been writing notes and essays all day, but hear us out! Putting those rambling thoughts in your head to paper will help you feel calmer and less overwhelmed with how you’re feeling. We promise later on down the line you’ll cherish these journal entries from such a huge turning point in your life!

make your space feel like home

Your dorm room may be a completely new space, but that’s not to say you can’t make it feel like home. Settle in and stay awhile. Deck out your dorm room with color and personality so you can feel a vibrant vibe every time you walk through the door. You’ll be surprised by how much a colorful comforter and desk will brighten your day.

resist that trip home until fall break

The logical answer to homesickness might seem like a quick visit home, but the best thing to do is the opposite. You’ll find that giving yourself that time on the weekends to familiarize yourself with campus, new friends and activities is a quick cure for homesickness. After a couple of months at school, fill up your weekender and reward yourself with a relaxing trip home over fall break.

get involved

There’s so much more to do at college than go from class to the library to your dorm. Ask your new friends, professors and resident advisor for advice on clubs, intramural sports and more activities on campus. It’s a great way to make friends and take a break from your studies!
