3 Easy Tips to Make Your Bed Like an Interior Designer

Is there a right or wrong way to make a bed? Not necessarily — but we all know a perfectly made bed when we see one. You know the one — a comforter so fluffy you could fall asleep instantly after lying down, pillows casually tossed but still manage to look perfect and the crisp, but soft sheets that are perfectly tucked around the mattress. Sound familiar? Although making a beautiful and cozy bed can seem daunting, it’s much simpler than it looks! If you want to take your master or guest bed from just a bed to the striking focal point of your room, here are three things to consider.

quilt vs. comforter

The first decision you need to make is whether you want to go the quilt or comforter route. They each serve a purpose and cater differently to your needs or taste. Quilts are lighter weight. They are typically more casual and can easily be swapped out to fit different seasons. Quilts can be great for guest rooms, too. If you live in a warmer climate or are decorating a beach or summer lake house, a lightweight quilt is the way to go.

On the other hand, comforters are thicker and generally warmer. Usually comforters are bought in a set, including pillow shams and occasionally have coordinating sheets and a bed skirt. Comforters are no-fuss and typically stay on the bed year-round.

You don’t necessarily have to choose one over the other. During cooler seasons, you can layer a quilt under a comforter for added warmth and a pop of color or pattern! We offer both quilts and comforters, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Deciding on the right style, color, size and amount of pillows can get overwhelming. Luckily, we have a few easy tips! First, follow the odd pillow rule — always have an uneven number of pillows on the bed. This removes symmetry and adds interest (especially if you have a pop of color in front)! Second, your standard pillows should match your sheets, whereas your shams should match your quilt or comforter. Any additional pillows should vary in size and be in complementary or pop colors to add interest. There is no one-size-fits-all number for every bed, but five typically fills the space without getting too overwhelming! Start adding these pillows to your cart!

Other than pillows, the best way to add interest to your bed is through pattern. Whether you go with a bold comforter or prefer a more subtle approach with just patterned pillows, print is what can take your room from underwhelming to wow. There are a few easy ways to incorporate pattern in a natural manner. If you want to start subtle, choose solid or textured bedding. Use a layered quilt or a few throw pillows to add in some personality. You can take that a step further by adding a simple printed sheet set or layered quilt. If you go the bold route, choose a patterned comforter with complementary printed pillows of a different scale. By mixing scales, the prints won’t compete and a focal point will be created. If you’re worried about pattern-overload, choose white sheets as a backdrop to make your colors pop!

Pro tip: If you have striped bedding, make sure the stripes go vertically from top to bottom rather than side-to-side, making the bed appear longer!
